ABOUT US
SIGNA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization composed of high school students who strive to connect diverse and remote groups within the art community. With at least three years of art classes, the members of SIGNA are all experienced in art, aiming to bring together small groups within the artistic community who may have limited experience interacting with other artists or the public. SIGNA endeavors to spread the chance of learning and experiencing art and aims to reach out to other artists, including hard-of-hearing and non-verbal students, in order to showcase their talents.
This organization was founded in hopes of promoting the universality of art and bringing together remote artistic groups to pursue an education in art. SIGNA truly believes that art can be used to both heal and enlighten one's vitality.
WHAT WE DO
ART EDUCATION
As partners with AAIM (Artipre Art Institute of Maryland), SIGNA works with AAIM's resources to create effective art curriculum. SIGNA's own members work with artists from beyond Artipre to create works of art and showcase unique artistic talents, especially those of students who are hard-of-hearing, non-verbal, or have limited interaction with the artistic community as a whole.
INSPIRE
We aim to make the children interested in the benefits of the art field through our work, so they can explore art-related opportunities that may help them in the future. We hope to prevent any students from being discouraged in pursuing the arts due to any circumstances, and instead inspire them to pursue their goals.
ART RESOURCES
SIGNA collects both used and new art supplies in order to donate art materials to those in need. From painting brushes to canvas boards, we bring all kinds of materials to ensure that our students have the necessities for making all kinds of art. We encourage our students to experience as many art mediums as possible.
DONATE
ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX-DEDUCTIBLE!
SIGNA aims to raise funds in support of art education for deaf and non-verbal children through different types of fundraisers. The organization will use the funds collected to purchase art supplies and other materials needed to educate its students. All proceeds will go to SIGNA funds, or else a small fraction of it will be allocated for the purposes of Artipre Art Institute of Maryland, SIGNA's partner.
EVENTS
Children’s Mask Donations
The team at SIGNA made and donated reusable, children’s fabric masks in early October of 2020. The group met for several sessions to make handmade masks from scratch. Our masks were made from two layers of 100% cotton fabric, following CDC guidelines. We used fun patterns to make the kids more excited to wear the masks and follow mask-wearing guidelines. Our masks were donated to the Community Action Council of Howard County, which provides jumpstart preschool services to low-income families in the community. We also donated masks to the Kennedy-Krieger Institute in Baltimore, which is dedicated to improving the lives of children with pediatric developmental disabilities. We felt that making masks for children was a great way to improve lives through art during these difficult times.
SIGNA Game Night
SIGNA is holding a game night in February of 2020! Through this event, SIGNA strives to spread awareness of art education for children with disabilities in their upcoming exhibition in March of 2020. We are hosting various games such as Kahoot, Pictionary, a drawing relay, and more! All of the games are a great opportunity to learn or practice your ASL skills and all people of all different experience levels are welcome to come. We look forward to seeing all of you at the game night!
Date: Friday, February 21st. 4:00 - 5:45 PM
Location: Miller Library, Ellicott Room
ART EXHIBITION
SIGNA recently hosted its most recent exhibition at the Miller Library on August 31st, 2019. The exhibition displayed the artistic creations of local student Rachel Son, enrolled with SIGNA, which aims to connect diverse and remote groups within the art community and communicate with other artists, including hard-of-hearing and non-verbal students, in order to showcase their talents. Rachel, who is a thirteen-year-old student with autism, made ten works that demonstrated the universality of art.
